Day 24
The Hand Me Down Dollhouse
Kylee climbed the stairs to the attic in her house. It was the day after her tenth birthday and she was about to get her long awaited birthday present.
A dollhouse.
This was not just any dollhouse. This was not a dollhouse to be played with. It was one just to look at. It was passed down for four generations.
"You see," her mother, Laura, said. "My great-grandfather built this dollhouse the year my grandmother was born."
"And, every year," she added. "On my grandmother's birthday a piece of furniture was added."
She showed Kylee the parent's room.
"Then," Laura said. "When my mother was born it was passed on to her on her tenth birthday. And every year my grandmother would add a piece of furniture."
Laura pointed to the living room.
"Then, when I was born it was passed on to me on my tenth birthday. Every year on my birthday my mother would add a piece of furniture."
Laura pointed to a little girl's bedroom.
"Now, My Love," Laura said, hugging Kylee tight. "When you were born, I decided to add a nursery."
"Every year on your birthday I added a piece of furniture. Now it gets passed on to you."
Kylee already knew this story. She had visited that dollhouse every year on her birthday. She was excited to see what would be added for her birthday.
Laura handed her a small box. Kylee eagerly opened it to see a beautiful cradle with a baby in it.
Kylee added it to the nursery.
"Mommy," Kylee said as they carried the dollhouse down to her bedroom. "I can't wait until I have a little girl so I can pass it on to her."
